WORKSHOP INFO ACCSE CONFERENCE 2007

Arrowmont School, September 6 - 8

Photo-Silk Screening for Dummies

We will cover a variety of silk screening processes with an emphasis on the use of photo emulsion as a stencil. The focus will be on painting fabric for quilters and fiber artists. We will construct a very simple screen frame and use processes that require very little equipment and would be useful for individual artists without a lot of spare cash to invest in equipment. In addition to textural images we will work with small repeat motifs that could be a basis of a whole cloth quilt or individual block elements.

Ed Lambert is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Georgia and a long time professor of Fabric Design at UGA. He has been a workshop presenter many times at Arrowmont and other Schools. Ed’s work is included in private collections and museums including the Mint Museum, the Smithsonian Institution and the Renwick Gallery.

Lab Fee: $20: This includes all dyes, pigments, photo emulsion and other studio supplies. An additional materials list will be sent to you upon registration, for items you can bring from home or purchase at the Arrowmont Art Supply Store.

Surface Decoration on Clay - Discovery and Technique

This two day workshop will concentrate on surface decoration applied to hand built platters and plates. Using simple drape and drop mold techniques we will create forms for our canvases that will be decorated with clay slips and underglazes. Exploring exercises will help participants discover their approaches to personal imagery.

Suze Lindsay is a studio potter living in Bakersville NC. She is known for her altered pottery forms that are decorated with slips and fired in a salt kiln. She teaches workshops nationally and internationally. Recent shows include the North Carolina Pottery Center, The Manchester Craftsman Guild in Pittsburg PA., and the AKAR Gallery in Iowa City.

Lab Fee: $25: This includes clay, slip, underglazes, wax resist and other studio materials. An additional materials list will be sent to you upon registration, for items you can bring from home or purchase at the Arrowmont Art Supply Store.

Mixed Media Collage

Make a series of mixed media collages that will fit into a cigar box which we will also embellish. Start collecting old photos, postcards, postage stamps, rubber stamps, vintage printed matter, decorative papers, buttons, trim and the precious and personal objects (photo copies) in your life. Design elements,& principals and collage history will be discussed. A full materials supply list will be provided to registered students.

Jacque Parsley creates mixed media collages and assembles from found objects. She has taught at the University of Louisville and Indiana University SE. Parsley’s work was presented at the “Worlds Women Online Exhibit” at the United Nations Fourth World Conference in Beijing China and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC. She has exhibited work both nationally and internationally in private, corporate, and museum collections.

Jewelry with Moving Parts

Making parts of your jewelry move is often necessary to make it wearable (such as link bracelets) and always makes it more interesting. This workshop will explore more simple machines to make things move back and forth and even spin front to back. We wont cover the traditional fussy tubular hinge as that would take the whole two days. We will cover things to do with jump rings and using folding, drilling and sawing to create moving parts. Basic metalsmithing is required.

Tom McCarthy has been a jeweler for over 20 years. His work is in the Mint Museum of Craft and Design, Gulf Coast Museum of Art, and Florida Craftsman. Tom holds an MFA in metals from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He exhibits and teaches nationally and was recently awarded a Fellowship in the Arts by the state of Florida in 2006.

Lab Fee: $30: This will include a kit supplying the metal and some tools, as well as flux, gas and other studio supplies. An additional materials list will be sent to you upon registration, for items you can bring from home or purchase at the Arrowmont Art Supply Store.

       Figurative Expressions in Cloth

The 2 day workshop will introduce students to needle sculpture with techniques developed by the instructor to manipulate and shape knit fabric into expressive doll forms. The class will focus primarily on the facial aspects of the human figure, combining this with a simplified body form ready for embellishment.

Akira Blount has been making doll forms for over 30 years. She has pieces in many collections and exhibitions worldwide including the Whitehouse Collection of American Craft, La Musee Des Arts Decoratif (part of the Louvre) Paris, The TN State Museum and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Akira has taught her techniques for many years at the Arrowmont School and the JC Campbell Folk School. She was the juror of “500 Handmade Dolls for Lark Books.

Lab Fee: $0: A detailed materials list will be sent to you upon registration, for items you can bring from home or purchase at the Arrowmont Art Supply Store.

Polymer Clay: Quilt Block Caning

The region in which I live is steeped in the rich history of quilting. Quilting lends itself naturally to millefiori canework, without all of the precise fabric cutting. The same techniques the quilters use to make their magnificent art can easily be replicated in polymer clay. We will explore techniques that turn polymer clay into fabulous textile patterns and use them to build basic canes that can be “pieced” like a quilt, to form more complicated quilt blocks.

Judy Belcher resides in West Virginia and has been creating with polymer clay for ten years. Her work has been exhibited nationally and is sold in retail galleries across the country. She is the author of “ Polymer Clay Creative Traditions” a book published by Watson Guptill Publications. She has also appeared on several television shows, including The Carol Duvall Show and Beads, Baubles and Jewels.

Lab Fee: $5: This will include polymer clay and embossing powder. An additional materials list will be sent to you upon registration, for items you can bring from home or purchase at the Arrowmont Art Supply Store.

Ceramic Sculpture: Narrative Interpretations of the Head

This clay workshop will explore expressive interpretations of a life size coil built head. Adding and subtracting clay for facial features will be demonstrated. Found object impressions and mark making will be encouraged to personalize the piece. Surface decoration ideas will be explored with the addition of grog, dry clay, and slips.

Debra Fritts is the director of the ceramics program at the Art Center Clay West in Roswell Georgia where she teaches ceramic sculpture and handbuilding classes. Debra’s work is recognized nationally through invitational exhibitions and awards, gallery representation, private collections and publications. Recently her sculptures were exhibited at SOFA Chicago. Her work can be seen at Pacini Lubel Gallery, Ferrin Gallery, Blue Spiral Gallery and Lowe Gallery.

Lab Fee: $l5: This will include clay, glazes and other studio materials. An additional materials list will be sent to you upon registration, for items you can bring from home or purchase at the Arrowmont Art Supply Store.

Woodturning for Profit

This workshop will consist of demonstration, discussion and practical exercises in the art of turning products for sale. We will discuss jigs and fixtures to help in the preparation of materials for production turning. Projects will include a variety of products that are marketable in craft shows as well as wholesale markets.

Nick Cook a full time production turner from Atlanta produces a variety of gift items, one of a kind bowls and vessels as well as work for furniture makers and millwork contractors. He spends much of his time demonstrating and teaching workshops throughout the US, Australia and New Zealand. Nick is a founding and lifetime member of the American Association of Woodturners and has written articles for American Woodturner, Woodworkers Journal and American Woodworker.

Lab Fee: $25: This will include all wood, finishes and other studio materials. An additional materials list will be sent to you upon registration, for items you can bring from home or purchase at the Arrowmont Art Supply Store.
